Hola Quetzal

Range of bags made from hand-woven fabric produced in Guatemala and fair-traded in Germany by the association APROSAS. A collaboration with Hanna Doleschal and Julia Munz

There are nine different models in six different colour schemes. For four of them, pattern and design are my creation. In addition to the assortment, a new name was found, a CI and a logo were created. For trade-fair-presentations a stand with specific furniture was designed and built. To start production the new product range was introduced to the weavers in Guatemala personally during a trip to Guatemala.

“The assortment translates the quality of textile tradition from Guatemala into modern products to be sold in Germany. The bags still have a Guatemalan soul. They build a bridge between the cultures.”

Sound-Convention

Music-compilations “served” in different ways

Joy, relaxation, yearning and happiness; four different feelings expressed through about 100 songs collected from 30 people, arranged in eight compilations, assembled in one box with coherent graphics and titles.

Music calender. Twelve themes, each of them illustrated graphically and by a collection of songs. Every month a different mood.

“With the right soundtrack, a good moment becomes unforgettable. Depending on the mood, on the moment, a different track fits. Every compilation meets a different need, is put together and designed in its own way.”

Small inside for outside

Foldable cocoon made from Polypropylene-felt offering space for at least two people

Thanks to the folding pattern and its manufacturing, the textile construction is self-supportive without further reinforcements. One person can unfold the cocoon and close it with the two-way-zipper.

“Everyone needs a hiding place sometimes. This cocoon is easily unfolded and folded again to be tucked away. No matter if inside or outside; the small retreat opens up immediately.”

Walk-in light paint

Concept of a LED-Light-Strip-System to light staircases

The attention is turned to the light rather than the emitting lamp. The strips are installed along the edges of the room. Thanks to the angled diodes, you are never dazzled no matter if ascending or descending. Using specially designed connection-parts you can place lamps wherever you want, lighting your chosen wall.

“Light defines the spatial awareness of humans. With this system you can create a walk-in light-painting that changes with every step you take and shows new arrangements and perspectives.”

A very special spoon

Photo-series for product-presentation

Hidden elements arouse curiosity. Light and shadow show silhouette and alignment. The spoon always keeps a little secret. All pictures are presented on transparent paper in an arrangement in front of a window.

“A small silver spoon, a very personal object, is the main actor of the play with transparent paper and sugar. Every picture shows a different aspect, covers and exposes. The view on the spoon changes; mysterious and exciting.”

Make an appearance

Design for the new foyer of the Kasseler Kunstverein (art-association of Cassel) in the Friedericianum

It’s a room within a room. Double-layered cloth panels define the room. They can be closed or removed completely. The furniture is flexible and makes room for a cinema, a café or lectures. There is no hierarchy or separation between staff and visitors.

“ The Kasseler Kunstverein – a place of exchange, encounter of contemporary art. After documenta 13 there was the possibility to re-think the self-conception and external perception of the Kunstverein by re-designing the foyer. It develops a platform that adapts. It creates a unique atmosphere without drawing too much attention. Corporate architecture for the “Kunstverein”. “

Nine visions side by side

Exhibition of nine contributions to the architectural contest “Hildegardstraße” in Munich

All plans are unified by the colored plane that extents into all rooms displaying the corporate color of one of the two hosts, accentuated by the corporate Gold, the color of the other host. The guidance systems, as well as the logos of the hosts, are directly applied to the floor of the old office space in which the exhibition takes place. Every contestant has their own room. Stand-up displays indicate the name and show the vision of the contestant.

“Ten days for conception and realization of the exhibition in which all contributions of the architectural contest were presented to the public for a week. This is the place for an open conversation about how new architecture can find a place in the historic center of Munich. Nine visions are shown, expressing different attitudes regarding this topic.”

In its folded stage the bag comes with four side pockets to transport liquids and breakable items safely. The folding pattern is defined by colored seams which indicate position and direction of every crease. Waterproof outside and a patterned, stain-repellent inside.

Documentations, portfolios and books

„Printed documentations, refined with individual bindings, details and book-binding-techniques, they become products themselves, which communicate the documented work haptically.”

Surely visible

Product development as part of the diploma thesis about storing and presenting art

By folding it along the specially developed pattern the passe-partout used for storing is easily turned into a presentation device for the artwork. For securing the stand of the device it can be fixed with the reuseable lock.

“Artworks on paper often function as a “starter drug” for art collectors. By designing a product, which establishes a closer link between the storing of art and its presentation the interaction with art becomes more immediate and intuitive. Art is being shown, set into relation. It becomes a part of everyday life.”

Cooking wood

Material draft regarding the topic of sustainability in collaboration with the Design Academy Eindhoven and the demolition company “Van Liempd”. A project with Constanze Buckenlei und Ruben van den Bossche

The material is a combination of rabbit glue, wood-chips and sawdust. In several experiments different raisins, organic and mineral supplements and different degrees of refinement in wood chips were tested. The material can be drilled, sawn, sanded and oiled. Using vacuum-forming you can create three-dimensional forms.

“Waste as a commodity. The material mostly consists of materials extracted by the demolition company during the process of tearing down a building. The lifecycle of the materials should not only be prolonged, but improved and there should not be more waste created.”

Black boxes in a white cube

Conceptual photography about “black boxes and white cubes”

“Five Turkish men, five black boxes to me, whose contents were important to me but I never really came close to, photographed on a terrace above the roofs of Istanbul, a white cube to them. Offering a private space it helped to convince the men modelling for me with socks and earrings on their ears. They became white cubes themselves presenting my jewelry.”
